Not all ice melt is created equal, and using the wrong one in a Chicago winter means it either stops working in the cold or quietly destroys your concrete and landscaping. Here's how the common options compare and what actually holds up here.
Rock salt (sodium chloride)
Rock salt is the cheapest and most common option, and it works fine in mild cold. The problem: it loses effectiveness below roughly 15–20°F — exactly the temperatures a Chicago winter routinely hits. It's also hard on concrete, corrodes metal, and can damage grass and plantings along treated edges. Cheap up front, costly to your surfaces over time.
Calcium chloride
Calcium chloride works down to around -25°F, melts faster, and actually generates a little heat as it dissolves — which is why it's the go-to for deep Chicago cold. It costs more per bag, but it keeps working when rock salt has quit, and that reliability is the whole point in a hard freeze.
Magnesium chloride and blends
Magnesium chloride and quality blended products split the difference — effective in serious cold while being gentler on concrete, metal, and landscaping than straight rock salt. For properties where protecting surfaces and plantings matters, a good blend is often the smartest choice.
What Chicago winters actually demand
Because Chicago regularly drops well below rock salt's effective range, relying on cheap salt alone leaves you with refrozen, dangerous surfaces on the coldest nights — exactly when black ice forms. A calcium-chloride product or a quality blend is what keeps walks safe through a real cold snap.
Protecting your concrete and landscaping
Over-applying the wrong product is how driveways spall and lawn edges die. The right approach is the right product applied at the right rate — enough to keep surfaces safe, not so much that it chews up your property.
What Snow Pushers uses
We match the de-icer to the conditions and apply it strategically, so your surfaces stay safe through the cold without the damage cheap over-salting causes. Salting is included in our service and available on its own — learn more about our salting services.
