Chicago winters don't ease in gently. The smartest thing you can do in November is get your property ready before the first real storm — not after. Here's a simple checklist to make this winter the one you don't have to think about.
1. Book your snow service early
The best snow companies fill their routes before the season starts, and prices and availability only get tighter once the snow flies. Locking in a seasonal plan now means you're covered from the first flake — and you're at the front of the priority queue, not scrambling for a last-minute provider mid-storm.
2. Walk your property and mark the hazards
Before the snow hides everything, walk your lot and note the spots a plow needs to know about — sprinkler heads, garden edges, curbs, drains, and low walls. Marking them now prevents damage later and helps your crew work faster and safer.
3. Check your drainage
Clogged gutters and blocked drains are where ice dams and refreeze problems start. Clear your gutters and make sure downspouts and drains are flowing before temperatures drop, so meltwater has somewhere to go instead of turning into a sheet of ice across your walk.
4. Stock ice melt — and use the right kind
Keep a bag of quality ice melt on hand for the gaps between service visits. Skip the cheapest rock salt, which stops working in deep cold and can damage concrete and plants; a blended calcium-chloride product works at lower temperatures and is gentler on your surfaces.
5. Know your sidewalk responsibility
Chicago law makes you responsible for clearing the public sidewalk in front of your property. Know your obligation before the season so you're not caught off guard by a fine — or worse, a slip-and-fall claim.
6. Have a plan for the big one
Every few winters, Chicago gets a storm that overwhelms anyone without a plan. The simplest plan is a seasonal contract with a company that monitors the forecast and routes to you automatically. When the blizzard comes, you want to already be on the list — not making calls.
